Working with FFF: hear from past and present freelancers & volunteers

FFF is a small non-profit organisation, with a small core team of full-time staff, but we have a history of working with volunteers and freelancers to help us achieve our mission. FFF has always been a place of like-minded people, doing meaningful work and gaining unique experience in a sector where relevant skills, knowledge & understanding are limited.

Whether it's learning about communications, how to work with partners, or expanding your creative portfolio, working with FFF has helped volunteers and freelancers move on to the next stage in their careers. They are essential to us.

Read on to hear from some of our past and present team members….

Amy - comms team

Beyond FFF: Operations and Activities Manager, Student Hubs

“I currently work for a youth social action charity who aim to get students engaged in social and environmental issues by the time they graduate, empowering the next generation of active citizens. When I applied for the role, I definitely felt that I had an advantage due to volunteering with FFF. The fact that I could demonstrate that I cared enough about social issues to give up some of my own time to support FFF's work was really valuable. I love being part of the comms team: while the flexibility and remote nature means that it's easy to fit around other commitments, it is also an important part of FFF's work that I feel I can add value to.”

Zakarina - Education & training team

Beyond FFF: Climate Action Officer

“I met some members of FFF when I previously worked as a sustainable development assistant. I have always been fond of sustainability but haven't always known how much this can affect football, or the level of influence the football world can have regarding a positive lifestyle change. Delivering education and training workshops have been key in increasing my confidence when presenting and has been beneficial experience for client-facing jobs.”

Alex - Fundraising team

Beyond FFF: Impact Development Manager, Seismic

There are a number of key areas that my work with FFF has benefitted my career in the sustainability sector. It has given me knowledge and confidence around some of the important topics and drivers in the sector. It has also evidenced my clear enthusiasm and passion for the subject which has shaped many conversations in interviews and the roles that I have worked in. In addition, I have been able to develop some key skills which have been translated into successful impacts at the roles I have had.

Liv - Comms team

Beyond FFF: freelance videographer

“FFF was my first freelance project, and already we were partnering with Premier League clubs and Nike Football, which was insane. Working with these renowned names in sport allowed me to kickstart my freelance career. It has allowed me to use my passion for engaging young people in initiatives such as our education work, which is really fulfilling.

Heather - Comms team

Beyond FFF: Development Officer, Keep Scotland Beautiful

Volunteering with FFF was a fantastic opportunity to connect with like minded people and have the opportunity to be able to make a difference in the football and sustainability sector. It also helped to confirm that working to support the sport sector with climate action is where I want to be and helped to develop skills I have taken forward into my current job role. I particularly enjoyed working on sustainability projects for football clubs and also supporting the education team.

Dan - Comms team

Beyond FFF: Sustainability Engagement Officer, University College London

“I have volunteered in the Communications team at FFF since 2021, when I was studying for my Masters. This experience allowed me to gain confidence in communication skills (particularly in communicating sustainability) and make myself a more competitive applicant for the jobs I have had in my career since. When I moved to my current position, I directly talked about FFF work in my application and job interview, which was key in helping me to be offered a job directly working in sustainability for the first time. My time at FFF has also allowed me to have some amazing experiences with the team, such as attending COP26 in Glasgow and presenting a video which was posted by my club, Wolves, on social media and shown on the in-stadium screens at a home game.”

Danny - Comms team

Beyond FFF: freelance content consultant

It's given me an alternative perspective of what work could and should be about. I'd always been tuned into a traditional work mode - 5 days a week for the same company, which I'd tend to get bored of after a couple of years and have to move on. Helping with FFF showed me how important it was to spend time on something of value. This has led to me completely changing the way I approach work - I still need to focus for a few days a week to pay the bills, but I now set aside dedicated time to work on projects that matter to me.

Stefan - Comms team

Beyond FFF: freelance videographer

“Working with FFF so early in my freelancing career allowed me to gain some valuable experience and case studies which have resulted in high-profile work in my videography career.”

Salomon - Comms team

Beyond FFF: freelance videographer

Volunteering for FFF introduced me to many different people and figures across sustainability and sport and allowed me to stay close to meaningful and positive work as I progressed in the sports media landscape.

Harry - Sustainability support team

Beyond FFF: Environmental Consultant, Temple

“FFF has been a significant help with my career so far in sustainability. By working with the team on a variety of projects, including Wolves’ ‘One Pack, One Planet’ initiative, I was given the perfect opportunity to learn about corporate carbon footprinting and all of the best practice methodology. In addition, I have garnered skills in sustainability strategy development and felt more confident to communicate with external stakeholders. These skills have been a massive help in job interviews, demonstrating a breadth of experience beyond my university studies, and have allowed me to contribute to important sustainability work during the first year of my current job. Even more importantly, my time so far with FFF has provided me with a clear direction of where I want to take my career in the years to come (something that eluded me throughout my formal education) - that is, all things carbon, sustainability and strategy development.”
