Our Power, Our Planet: Celebrating Football’s Renewable Energy Wins This Earth Day
It’s Earth Day!
The theme of this year’s Earth Day is ‘Our Power, Our Planet’, spotlighting efforts to accelerate the transition to clean, renewable energy.
To mark the occasion, we’re celebrating five standout initiatives from the world of football that have taken place since last year’s Earth Day – each making a significant contribution to clean energy generation.
Euro 2024 renewable energy initiatives
Last summer’s tournament in Germany included a number of sustainability initiatives, with stadiums retrofitted with technologies to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions. Other initiatives included discounted public transport for fans, enhanced waste management systems, and circular economy pilots inside stadiums — all designed to lower the environmental impact of the event and promote greener behaviours across the board.
Man City’s training facility upgrades
Manchester City is stepping up its sustainability credentials with plans for a major solar installation at the Joie Stadium. The new setup will see 3,000 solar panels fitted across the facility, generating up to 4.39 MWh of renewable electricity annually, which is enough to make it one of the top clean energy producers in football.
London Stadium to receive ‘solar membrane’ on roof
Plans are underway to install a state-of-the-art solar membrane on the roof of the London Stadium, home of West Ham United. The project, which involves a £4.4 million solar panel investment, will generate around 850,000 kWh of electricity per year, making it one of the greenest sports and entertainment venues on the planet.
World record in vertical solar panels – the Norwegian National Football Stadium
In June 2024, Oslo’s Ullevaal Stadium made headlines by becoming home to the world’s largest rooftop vertical solar panel installation. The pioneering setup will deliver 219,000 kWh of clean electricity per year, demonstrating how even space-limited rooftops can be used creatively to drive renewable generation.
JA SOLAR installation at Borussia Dortmund
SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, one of Europe’s most iconic stadiums, is set to receive more than 11,000 solar modules across its roof. This JA SOLAR-backed project is expected to generate over 4 GWh of clean electricity annually, slashing the club’s carbon emissions by 1,800 tons each year.
