FIELDS FOR THE FUTURE:
A PRACTICAL CLIMATE ADAPTATION
TOOLKIT FOR COMMUNITY SOCCER IN THE USA
For millions around the world, soccer is more than a sport. It’s a lifeline. And it depends on the places we play.
Those places are now under growing pressure. As climate impacts intensify, pitches are becoming less reliable and less playable. And when they’re at risk, so too are the relationships, routines and communities built around them.
That’s why we created Fields for the Future: A Practical Climate Adaptation Toolkit for Community Soccer in the USA - launching as part of our World Cup climate adaptation campaign.
Produced in partnership with Count Us In, Earth FC, and the U.S. Soccer Foundation, this toolkit is designed for the coaches, volunteers and organisations on the frontlines - the ones already adapting, often without the support they need. It helps community clubs to:
Understand how climate change is affecting local soccer
Identify the specific hazards impacting their pitches and players
Assess vulnerability and take practical action to adapt
Because every player, at every level, starts here.
Together, we can protect and strengthen the spaces that make the game possible - supporting healthier fields, stronger communities, and a future where soccer continues to thrive.
“Football holds up a mirror to society, and it is encouraging to see the game beginning to respond to a changing climate. As extreme weather events intensify, climate adaptation is essential, not only to protect football and the communities around it, but to position the game as a leader, inspiring other sectors to respond with proportionate climate action.”
